So, I’m in a show. It’s a big reason I’ve not been blogging regularly (but not the only reason, I’ll admit). And since I’ve been struggling with what to write about lately, I thought I’d share some reflections on the production I’m a part of.
A Brief Overview
We aren’t putting on a traditional play. We (GhostLight Ensemble Theatre) spent weeks brainstorming topics that were important to us. We finally landed on understanding emotions. Then, we created a 2-hour program about that. There are 4 original short plays, an original poem, a music and dance piece, videos, and a song mash-up. We created almost all of it ourselves.
The Process
This whole process has been a unique opportunity for me. While I’ve collaborated with people before, I’ve never had to do collaborative writing. Which was not easy. Every creative person has a different process, a different point of view, and a different vision. So it’s interesting to try and reconcile those differences to make something that we’re all happy with. I’ve really come to admire the talents my fellow cast members have and I’m so excited about how all the pieces turned out.
My Creativity
Usually, when I’m doing a production, it’s about all I do (aside from work and sleep, though usually less sleep). While I might be inspired to do more writing, I won’t have time for it. With this production, I’ve been able to use those creative urges, both for the production and for my own projects. Being surrounded by so many creative people and hearing about the other things they do is great too. It inspires me to keep trying, even on days when the words don’t seem to come.
The People
I am so incredibly thankful for the people in this cast. There are only 13 of us, and we’re all within 10 years of each other, age-wise. This has allowed us to really get to know each other and get close as we’ve worked on this project, which is truly a personal one. And like many of the theatre productions I’ve been a part of, our cast has truly become a family. I’m so glad I was a part of this and got to meet these wonderful people.
Sorry for the word vomit. I promise I’ll be back to my regularly scheduled blogging soon (our show opens next week), but I just wanted to get some of these thoughts written down.

Thanks Carol! We’ll be performing for the general public as well as doing a few workshops at the church and a few schools.
