I’ll be the first to admit that the stage may be one of the hardest places to adapt a fairy tale. After all, a key element of any fairy tale is the magic that is inherently missing in our everyday life. While special effects can mimic magic, movies and animated features have an advantage inContinue reading “Beyond the Page: My 6 Favorite Fairy Tales on Stage”

Myth or Magic: A Castle in Ruins
I’m reviving all my favorite series! That’s right, Myth or Magic is back again! “The princess and the people in the castle fall into a sleep for 100 years, but what happens to all the food in the castle, or the furniture, or the castle walls? Wouldn’t it all decay and rot away? What kindContinue reading “Myth or Magic: A Castle in Ruins”
The Myth of True Love’s Kiss
When you think about fairy tales, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind when it comes to breaking curses? If you’re anything like me (or if you read the title of this post), your mind immediately went to the magical cure-all: true love’s kiss. Think about it. According to the stories, Snow WhiteContinue reading “The Myth of True Love’s Kiss”
What Fairy Tales Teach Adults
I’m back! I’m so sorry for being gone for months. As you may know, I was recently in a play, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’ve always loved that play and I finally got to be in it! I played the role of Helena and after weeks of memorization, a rather intense and frantic rehearsal schedule,Continue reading “What Fairy Tales Teach Adults”
Ding, Ding, Ding: We Have a Winner!

CONTEST: Sleeping Beauty Story
Exciting news, word nerds! Today marks the beginning of my first ever contest! As you may know, I’ve recently been posting a short story. I wrote it for a contest last year, but unfortunately missed the submission deadline. But guess what! The publishing house that ran the contest is doing another one! This time, it’sContinue reading “CONTEST: Sleeping Beauty Story”
Words About Disney Princes
We all have our complaints about Disney’s princes. I mean, two of them don’t even have names. And I know I’m skeptical of the a man who falls in love with a girl he barely knows because she’s pretty and then can’t remember what she looks like. But why is that? Until next time, wordContinue reading “Words About Disney Princes”
Words About Disney Princesses
In which I rant about Disney princesses. Partly inspired by a recent blog post by my friend Amy Green, and partly by my thoughts on Strong Female Characters. What do you think? Share your opinions below. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Until next time, word nerds!
Why the Woods?
I was walking across campus this morning (very carefully, because it’s ridiculously icy today) trying to decide what to write about when a thought struck me. Why do so many fairy tales involve woods? Think about it. Sleeping Beauty was raised in the woods, then her castle was isolated by a forest of thorns. SnowContinue reading “Why the Woods?”
Recommendation: Sleeping Beauty
There have been many adaptations of Sleeping Beauty, many of which I’ve enjoyed. Some set it in a fantasy world, some in the future, and some even cast the villain as the hero. My favorite version, and today’s recommendation, is Melanie Dickerson’s The Healer’s Apprentice. The Healer’s Apprentice is set in Germany in 1386. The main characterContinue reading “Recommendation: Sleeping Beauty”
